Invisalign® Q & A

A beautiful smile is just one of the many benefits of Invisalign®. If your teeth are not as straight as you would like, Invisalign® may be the treatment you need to give you a confident smile. However, having straight teeth goes beyond appearance. A proper bite provides optimum oral health which can improve your physical health and well-being.

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is an orthodontic system that uses special clear retainers that you wear snugly over your teeth, causing your teeth to move into their ideal position over time. The retainers are made of a strong and durable clear plastic, making them virtually invisible while you wear them. Each retainer is custom made for your teeth. You wear these retainers in a specific sequence in order to move your teeth to their ideal position. A typical Invisalign® treatment will take 15 to 30 retainers. Each retainer is usually worn for a week and then changed out to the next retainer in the sequence. Invisalign® treatment times are generally shorter than conventional braces with wires and brackets.

What happens during treatment with Invisalign®?

Once you and your dentist have decided you are a good candidate for Invisalign®, impressions of your teeth will be made. We send the impressions to Invisalign® Lab where your retainers will be made and shipped back to our office. At your next visit, your dentist will map out a precise treatment plan, including the exact movements of your teeth and how long your treatment will take. Your dentist will show you how your teeth will move and what the final result will be. We give you the set of retainers to wear and we will have you come back every six weeks to ensure your treatment is progressing smoothly.

How does Invisalign® compare to braces that attach to your teeth?

Many patients prefer Invisalign® because the clear retainers makes them nearly invisible when worn. Other benefits of Invisalign® over braces are that it is easier to brush and floss your teeth because you can remove the retainers and because you can remove the retainers, you can eat more of the foods you enjoy. Below is a comparison between Invisalign® and braces:

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign®?

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for Invisalign®; some patients will require conventional braces. To determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign®, we recommend you call our office to schedule a consultation with the dentist. In the consultation appointment, your dentist will perform an evaluation of your teeth and gums to make sure your oral health is in tip top condition before beginning Invisalign® treatment.

What are the benefits of having straighter teeth?

Besides boosting your confidence, straighter teeth makes it easier for you to keep your teeth and gums clean, thereby reducing your risk of cavities and gum disease. Straighter teeth can help patients who are experiencing discomfort in their jaw joint due to the improper alignment of their teeth. Straighter teeth will reduce the likelihood of your teeth wearing unevenly or prematurely, therefore decreasing the risk of decay and fracture. If your teeth protrude, they are more likely to fracture in the event of trauma.
